Drew Butcher

DrewButcherFrom Middle School on  I lived with my grandma, Marion B. Davis, on a horse farm called Blue Grass Heights (interesting fact: this is where Sea Biscuit was conceived) in Lexington Ky.   I attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and ran Cross-Country and Track for the Bull Dogs.  My PR (at PLD) was during my junior year at the Kentucky State CC Meet a 5K in 17:28.00 here is the link.  I can still remember feeling like I was flying. After graduating High School I went to a small liberal arts college called Transylvania University.  I was drawn to Transy by an athletic scholarship; however, it turned out to be a great fit for me.  The races at the time were 8K  and my PR was in my junior year a 28:48.  While I was at Transy I also swam for the college.  That was great fun; but, admittedly i was really quite bad!  Eventually, I learned how to do a flip turn.  Thanks Coach Ebel and Tessy!  At Transy I had a wonderful math teacher named David Shannon who showed me how to be rigorous in my mathematics.  By the end of my junior year Dr. Shannon helped me into an REU at Oregon State University.  When I came back I finished my senior year at the University of Kentucky, where I met my future mathematical advisor Ed Enochs.  I graduated from the University of Kentucky and went out to Salt Lake City to work on a PhD.  After finishing a masters at the University of Utah I decided to come back and finish the PhD., under Ed Enochs, at the University of Kentucky.  While I was back in Kentucky I coached a bit, at Transy., and worked very diligently to get out as fast as possible.  I made it out in three years and now have the best job in the world, a math professor.  I love teaching and getting to meet so many different young people who are starting out their lives.  I hope that I can in someway help each and every one of my students to accomplish their goals and dreams.  Thanks for reading and dream big!… best, DrB
